George Anderson and Sons are currently working
in partnership with The Potato Council and Greenvale A.P.
to offer your P1 and P2 pupils .
We have tried to keep things as simple as
possible and to use resources that will fit into the curriculum
using Art, Maths and Environmental Studies as a basis
for the competition so as not to interfere with a busy
school schedule.
The subject of this competition is .
The winning pupil will win a day out for
their entire class to visit Greenvale A. P. in the Scottish
Borders. This is the company that supplies over 700.000
tons of potatoes per year to all the major supermarkets
and to wholesalers like George Anderson and Sons. We will
show you the fields where they grow, explain how they
are cultivated, picked, packed (by robots) and transported
to your school kitchen: local produce from the field to
the plate. There will be time to see round some other
exhibits and picnic lunch.
Luffness Mains is one of the farms that
grow potatoes for Greenvale and they been awarded LEAF
MARQUE accreditation. This stands for Linking Environment
And Farming. These farms must try to use as little fertilisers
and chemical pesticides as is possible. They must also
improve the habitat for wildlife on their farm. By using
crop rotation methods and replanting hedgerows they can
attract many different species of insects, amphibians,
birds and mammals. This results in the farm becoming more
sustainable.

We would like your pupils to use potato
stamps and paint to print a colourful mosaic picture of
one of the creatures attracted to the farm because of
this style of land management. We have some outlines
available for you to use, just print them
off. Either click on the link to the left or use the main
menu to go to Kids Corner > Animal Colouring Sheets.
Better still you could do your own. Remember to
put Name, Class and School on each picture.
If you would like to take part please email
George Anderson and Sons with your details and we will
arrange for some potatoes to be sent to your school for
you or your classroom assistant to cut into squares, circles,
triangles etc. When you are ready just email again and
we will arrange for the pictures to be uplifted. The
mosaics will be presented to a panel of judges on 4th
of July who will then pick a winner.
We hope you find this fun and worthwhile
for your pupils.
